If you’re thinking about selling your home anytime in the near future, you’re probably wondering what you need to do to get that home ready to sell. I recently visited a home (unannounced) and found that it wasn’t quite ready to hit the market.

I walked through the home and took note of all of the simple things that could be done to increase the home’s value and have more impactful showings. Here are just a few of the things I pointed out:

    • Put the patio furniture away. If it’s not nice enough outside to use it, you should store it away.
    • The front door is hands-down the best improvement you can make to your home in terms of an ROI. Sliding doors are great for resale value and curb appeal as well.
    • Bring in as much light as possible. You don’t have to replace your blinds (and you probably shouldn’t, because you won’t get much of a return), but opening them to let in light is a great idea.
    • Popcorn ceilings can be a big distraction but are actually pretty inexpensive to take care of if you have the time to get them fixed.
    • Consistency is key. Doing the little things right is what’s going to get you the most money possible on your sale. Having things tie together is more important than having things improved.
    • Updated hardware on older cabinets might be a better idea than replacing them entirely. However, this depends upon the current condition of your cabinets.
